The range of sound

πŸ‘ Let’s classify the range of sound step by step. πŸ•ͺπŸ•©

1. By Frequency (Hz = cycles per second)

Sound is usually divided into three main ranges:

  • Infrasound: below 20 Hz

    • Too low for humans to hear.

    • Elephants and whales use these sounds.

  • Audible sound: 20 Hz – 20,000 Hz (20 kHz)

    • The range humans can hear.

    • Low = bass drum, thunder (~50 Hz).

    • Mid = talking, music (~500–2000 Hz).

    • High = birds chirping (~8000 Hz).

  • Ultrasound: above 20,000 Hz

    • Too high for humans.

    • Used by bats, dolphins, and in medical imaging (ultrasound scans).

2. By Loudness (Intensity, measured in decibels dB)

  • Soft sounds: whisper (~30 dB)

  • Normal conversation: ~60 dB

  • Traffic noise: ~80 dB

  • Rock concert / Jet engine: 100–120 dB (can damage ears)

  • Above 140 dB = painful, dangerous.

3. By Pitch (perceived frequency)

  • Low-pitched: deep, rumbling sounds (drums, thunder).

  • Medium-pitched: normal voices, guitar.

  • High-pitched: whistles, bird calls.
